Education Today and Tomorrow
Education is perhaps the main reason why society has progressed. But as society progresses the education system needs to change. It’s not that education is doing itself out of a job; rather, education must continually advance as society and the individual advance.
One way to partially future proof ourselves against these continual changes is to be proficient in fundamental principles. Critical thinking, calculus, strong reading/writing skills, creativity in all its forms – these things have countless applications today, and will have new future applications in areas not yet explored. More specific learning, telephone switchboard operation, paper filing protocol, are now useless. Other skills, looking after horse drawn carriages or sewing out own clothes, are only of use to a few specialists. We do well if we know learn how to learn new skills, and apply then in a useful way. We do poorly if we only copy what somebody has shown us. That’s already been done, and it may not be applicable in the future.
The other way to future proof ourselves is to simply keep learning new information, both facts and concepts. The best mind in the world is wasted if it has the facts wrong. With the internet at our fingertips there is no excuse for not trying to learn more, though with fake news and inaccurate information of all forms we have to be critical and caution of what we read.
Changing Approach to OC Coaching Sydney
The old school idea of learning was about rote learning. Really, there have always been students and teachers who disliked the rote learning approach. More accurately, they disliked education that was only rote learning. Rote learning is a starting point. Children need to rote learn the alphabet when they are young. Then they need to be creative and write their own sentences. If we only rote learn, then we only repeat what somebody else has already done. And decent education system needs to go beyond this.
Perhaps the most important skill for future advancement is a combination of experimentation and agility. Try different ideas, hypothesises, and find what works. Creative and lateral thinking comes up with a lot of ideas, not all of them are useful or practical. Critical thinking finds the best options, and makes them work. It is easy to overlook what we mean by useful, practical or successful. We need to look at what we what to achieve, and outcomes, and possible side effects. But when we know how to get rid of the unusable ideas (which are part of the learning process) we might be left with some good, solid, innovative results.
Class discussions in OC (opportunity class) coaching are highly useful here. We bounce ideas off other people, and put the groups combined abilities to good use. Being able to work with others is important here. Being able to see mistakes and useless tangents, other options are useful here, is also important.
