How to Write Well?

We will intuitively sense if a piece of writing is good. When something is well written it is easy to follow, it makes thing clear; it simply works. As to why it works, that is often hard to explain. We can see the result of an author’s work, the well written essay, but we probably cannot see the effort or methods used to achieve that result. So we may find it hard to learn to do this our self.

Some insights.

Strong ideas – Ideas that are interesting and important are essential for any decent essay. They should also be relevant to the question or subject area we are discussing.
Organization – We need to structure an essay, a paragraph, an individual sentence in a logical manner. A list of facts and ideas is not an essay, even if the facts are right and the ideas are sound. Link facts together so that the reader understands what we mean.
Sentences – We speak and write in different ways. Spoken language has pauses, emphasized words, and other forms of verbal expression. Written language has none of this. Instead, we must use the rhythm of the words and the punctuation to make our sentences flow clearly.
Read your sentences out loud without expression, and make sure that the emphasis falls into place.
Voice – Use a formal voice for an essay, or a casual voice for a popular magazine article. Text-books and encyclopedias usually have the right voice for a school essay.
Vocabulary – Use the simplistic words possible, and only use technical terms when they directly relate to the subject you are discussing.
Short and long sentences. – The recommended style at the moment is shorter sentences. This is usually preferable. With shorter sentences there is less to go wrong, less chance of the reader losing track of what you are saying. The reader will not have to remember what was said in the first part of the sentence by the time they get to the end of the long sentence. Short sentences are easy-to-digest pieces of information. But occasionally a long sentence is effective if is is well written and flows well. Yet a well written long sentence is harder to achieve than a few short, neat sentences.
Conventions of Writing – Language is something used to communicate between individuals. It uses conventions for spelling, punctuation and grammar. It is no good for an individual to use their own private language convention because the reader will probably not be able to understand what is being said. Know the rules/conventions of the language. Be able to write clearly, but with your own ideas and style.

Even if we do not consciously understand how a well written piece of writing manages to works we can still learn from it. Just the act of reading will help us pick up at least some good habits. Children learn to speak and read by listening to adults. We can continue to learn language skills by reading well written essays and literature.

If is not too difficult to write a short essay off the top of our head. This is fine if it is just one page long; we can plan this type of essay in our head. But is if is longer that 300 words we will probably need to write an outline, and then fill in the details to create the final essay.
Essay outlines prevent us from simple mistakes, like repeating the same idea twice at two different point of the essay, or missing something important that we should have included at the beginning. A well planned essay, one that introduces the topic, states the fundamental ideas, and them logically develops those ideas, will do far better than a disorganized essay, even if both essays contain the same basic information.
