By contrast, a student who learnt to do sums on paper while showing the working steps can steadily progress to more advanced maths. The same applies to essay outlines for English and other subjects.

Learning is sometimes steady growth, sometimes paradigm shifts. A child may need to approach a subject in a new way to make progress. A student who writes high quality essays might struggle in public speaking, because public speaking is not just reading an essay out loud. There is a different approach for essay writing, for fiction writing, for public speaking, for debates, and for teaching in front of a classroom .
