We might well say that we can get better grades if we submit better quality work. But If we try to define what quality means then we end up struggling for an answer. We probably have an intuitive understanding of the concept of quality, but have trouble giving a simple dictionary-type definition. At best we end up with synonyms for the work, but this is of little help.
It might help if we are less general, and ask about what quality means in a particular circumstance.
So what is quality in a essay, or an exam answer?
– Quality answers will really respond to what the question asks. If we have a math question we expect a specific and correct answer. If we have an English language questions we need to give information that really answers that specific question, and not just supply information about the subject in general.
– Quality answers need to be accurate. This is obvious in math. This is less obvious in English, but still just as essential. Do you have your facts right? Then write your answer on accurate information.
Tie information together. We might get some marks for a list of facts, if they are accurate. But is we are answering a English question we are talking about a narrative, a series of events and ideas. Good answers may take the form: This happened, which caused these results. We probably can’t give just the results.
– Original thinking, if possible. Many students can pass by repeating what they have been told by teachers and textbooks. If we can see something original in the text we will do far better, but never do this at the expense of answering the question.
– Good Grammar. This should be taken for granted, but out grammar should be impeccable, and the answer perfectly clear.
Think of the question as one half, with the answer as the complementary other half. A quality answer will be the perfect answer to the question.
